Maranga Mai Te Waipounamu

Maranga Mai Te Waipounamu is a strength-based collaboration with Nga Kete Matauranga Pounamu, Leoma, Hurihia, Raniera Tawaroa, Hemi Kiwikiwi, Maui Studios and Whenua Patuwai. An initative funded by Te Putahitanga; a Whanau Ora commisioner.

Over the months of June and July 2019, we ventured to Westport, Motueka and Dunedin to share this concept and pull together local community organisations in a bid to strengthen their resilience with suicide prevention.

“Progress comes from celebrating difference and never building walls. It’s about building bridges and strengthening communities” – Maranga Mai Te Waipounamu

Coming to our kura.

Over the past seven years, the Kimiora team have facilitated our Kimiora suicide prevention training in Kura Maori across the country. Supported by Te Puni Kokiri and He Waka Hourua, we have trained over 2500 rangatahi Maori. With this support, we have also taken rangatahi on wananga on our Awa Tupua, working in collaboration with Kii Tai and Te Taitimu Trust; where we hosted one of the biggest rangatahi suicide prevention wananga in the country.

Each school holidays, we continue to run wananga rangatahi focused on leadership, Te Reo and sustainability. We also facilitate training for trainers initiative for rangatahi to extend our Kimiora suicide prevention training.

Tupu Toa Graduation

We were proud to support Mauriora Tawaroa Takiari as a Tupu Toa intern in 2018. This 6-month opportunity helped her shadow staff within the Te Reo Maori advisory service of The Ministry of Education.

This opportunity through the support of Kimiora Trust helped her gain strong corporate and public service skills as a Tupu Toa intern. As a result of this, she graduated from this program and gained full-time employment as one of the ministries youngest Reo Maori advisors.

We endorse the Tupu Toa program and its support for Maori and Pasifika young leaders who are rising stars in our community.
